Combative Chess

I think we failed to teach the boys a very important rule about how to win Chess.

IMG_1018 Note the King in the pile of ‘killed guys’ of Patrick’s.  Funny stuff.  They get so excited about killing each other that every ‘man’ is equal on the chess board.  At least they’re learning something about how they are supposed to move.  Hopefully.

Quotables

Please check back in a few days for Halloween pictures below this post.  Scott took the camera with all of the pictures in it with him on his latest business trip.

Luke, complaining to me about Andrew:  “Andrew hit me.  Andrew’s a hitter machine”

Andrew was having a little giggle fit one day, and Joe got a very entrepreneurial idea.  “We should sell him!  We could call him a laughing machine!”  Patrick thought better of the idea, “We don’t want to sell him!  We love him so much!”

Again, from Patrick, my little lover:  Luke was having a very bad day, behavior-wise.  A spanking had to be administered to adjust the attitude.  Patrick stuck up for his buddy.  “Mommy, you were being mean to Luke”  Mommy:  “What would you have done, Patrick?”  Patrick:  “I would hug him and kiss him and hug him and love him.”  Good plan.

We had some issues with Luke at the beginning of school.  He was complaining a lot and generally being pessimistic and ungrateful.  We worked hard to correct the very annoying little problem.  When he seemed to be getting over the habit, I had given Patrick and Luke ice cream cones.  As Luke took his, he said, with a big smile, “And I won’t even complain that Patrick got more ice cream that I did.  I’ll just eat it and be happy”

Two short cute ones from Andrew:  “Ma binky!”  (that’s ‘my binky’).  We gave him a haircut a few weeks ago and while talking on the phone with Granddad, he pointed to his head and said “Kerr Hut!”  It’s always funny when they think you can see them on the phone, too.

Joseph had a fever one night and came into bed with me in the wee hours of the morning.  “I was having bad dreams.  I tried to not think about it, but my mind is so loud.”  He was obviously pretty scared, so we snuggled until it was time to get up.  Later that day, I asked him what his dream was about.  He said, “my mind was yelling ‘GO AWAY!  THERE’S NO CANDY THIS HALLOWEEN!’”  Scary dream, indeed!  I couldn’t even break a smile because he was so serious about it.

We sent Aunt Janelle a care package this morning.  The boys all made pictures for her, but Joe’s was the funniest.  We’ve been trying to explain war to them in the simplest terms.  Joe drew a picture of Janelle fighting a bunch of people with a light saber.  Apparently, his only understanding of war is Star Wars!

Finally, the boys got a funny kind of candy this Halloween that was a vampire face with red gooey syrup that squirted out of it.  I think they were all too afraid of it to open it.  They insisted that I send it to Janelle so she could give it to the “bad guys” since it was so yucky.  It’s on its way now.

Halloween

IMG_0981 We had an eventful Halloween.  Mom and Dad were in Kansas City at the start of the day for a family wedding.  Grandma and Papa flew up to stay with the boys for our super short trip.

After we went around our own neighborhood, Patrick and Luke graciously offered to pass out candy at our house.  They sat on our porch hollering, “Candy!  Get your fresh, free candy!”  We had lots of takers.

Next, we went to our friends’ house:

Patrick poses in front of their house. IMG_0992 Their friends are: Sarah, the angel hiding behind her goodie bucket, Jonah the “Samurai guy” and the all black (except for the cute pink coat) and ominous Ninja, Amelia.  They all went around in their neighborhood for a while until they got too cold or too tired.IMG_0995Andrew wasn’t as much into collecting the food as he was into eating it.  When he got a little too cold, he opted to run for home and stay in with the rest of us.  Our friends had their grandparents over and Grandpa E had a rousing jostling match with Andrew.

He was so delighted to be swording with the glow stick tubes.  The rest of us were happy to have the entertainment while we waited for trick-or-treaters.  It was hilarious to watch.  Thanks for playing Mr. E!
